There definitely needs to be more thought about the return visitor hooks and game experience and design- I do think that the FarmVille etc. Facebook games have pushed the envelope in terms of social participation and involvement.

Excellent article. Deep integration of CRM with account and player data should be done routinely. Do you recommend any particular tools? We've moved to SugarCRM (open source) for our corporate capabilities, but it probably could be used to help with this kind of capability.

Great article - it throws a lot of light on the 'games as a service' mindset that we need in the F2P world. There's so much we can learn from industries which were virtually irrelevant to game design when games were fire-and-forget products.

There are 'red carpet' programs. You don't notice because you're not a whale and they VIP treatment is done 'tactfully' just as you suggest.

I had a nice experience with TellTale Games recently: their newsletter is always brilliant, and the latest one contained a discount offer to drive participation in a marketing survey. The survey was intelligently designed and took me about 10 minutes to complete. I did it on Saturday, and this morning I received a friendly email with my discount code, suggesting that if I didn't need it (likely to be the case for fans), I could forward it along to a friend. Those nice folks at TellTale, they Get It.
