Where to find us in November
This month, we’re going our separate ways on the 15th of November. Absence makes the heart… well, totally dependent on internet access really, right?
Julien and I are attending Game Connection from 16-18 November in Lyon, and Julien will be arriving a bit early to present a Master Class session on Monday 15th, covering “Communication & Marketing for Online Games”. If you’d like to meet us at the event, please ping us through Game Connection’s booking system or use our contact form to send a meeting request.
Thomas and Martin are heading to Korea for a couple of weeks to represent ICO at Gstar. They’ll be available for business meetings on the 18th and 19th, so please get in touch if you’d like to see them.
(Diane is off having a splendid adventure, and cannot be found until the week of 22nd November.)

Smarter Marketing : The Slides
As indicated earlier, I took part in a series of talks regarding self-publishing, during an event organized in London by TIGA yesterday. During the few minutes that were allowed to me, I focused on simple reasons why marketing campaigns are often underperforming, and how to avoid these. The slides are below, slightly updated since the event, and don’t hesitate to comment on it if you feel like it !

WTB PR intern!
ICO Media, our pan-European media relations service, is continuing to grow and flourish! We’re currently looking for an intern to support the team, starting in November.
We’re always looking to improve our reach within Europe, so our ideal candidate for this role is someone from one of the Scandinavian countries, with existing ties to games media in their region.

And 5!
It seems like I make an announcement about a newcomer to the team all the time now! We’ve just grown to just five, but it feels like we are a lot more when we look at number of projects we are undertaking.
So, I am very pleased to announce that last week, ICO gained a new team member: Julien Wéra. I have known Julien for many years, from when he was playing The Fourth Coming and Dark Age of Camelot as I was operating them. In some small way I like to think that I might be partly responsible for his career choice, and I take great pride in this considering how well he has done. One of the first team members of the gPotato Europe team, he was leading their PR and Marketing activities before he joined Popcap’s European office to manage their Public Relations towards France and Germany. He is coming to us with wide experience that complements our current team very well, and will help to develop ICO Media, our PR service dedicated to online games. We have been developing ICO Media stealthily (but not really secretly) for the past year now, in parallel to ICO’s growing consulting activities.
We shall talk more about ICO Media at Cologne, during gamescom, where you can come visit us on our booth in the business area: Hall 4.1, Aisle H, no.055.
Meanwhile, you are very welcome to say “Bienvenue” to Julien.

Games as a Service talk – Develop in Brighton
Back in May, I gave a talk at the LOGIN conference about Games as a Service. I haven’t shared it yet here, but there was a good reason (one that is still valid today unfortunately).
Most of my talks recently have been very factual and number-driven, and they have been supported by very factual, number-driven Powerpoint presentations. Sharing those was very easy and straightforward. If you didn’t attend the event then you missed some of the information, but honestly, you could get the gist of it in Slideshare.
The Games as a Service presentation doesn’t work that way. It’s very dependent on the content of the talk, and it doesn’t stand alone very well. I was hoping to be able to take some time to add comments to the presentation, and expand on its usefulness, but realistically it won’t happen before the next time I deliver the lecture, which will be at Develop in Brighton on July the 13th.

F2P in Europe presentation – From Quo Vadis
Quo Vadis was in April, so this presentation update is coming to you with some delay, but better late than never (as they say)!
I have decided to change the format of the presentation though. Rather than uploading the one that supported my lecture at Quo Vadis, I’ve made a “generic” presentation based on it (which in turn was based on one for GFG that I gave this past January in Hannover). The new presentation is essentially the same as the Quo Vadis version, but rather than adding another Slideshare presentation, I replaced the GFG presentation and changed the title to make it less specific. The idea is to simplify the information and point people at the most up-to-date version of the material. You can still find a few similar presentations in our profile, which I’ve left alone as they contain uniquely useful info.
Here is the new presentation:
In other news, you may have noticed that we’ve recently redesigned our website, which now includes a Korean version. It’s a work in progress, so if there’s anything you would like to on the site, please let us know.

Here comes a new challenger – Player 4 has joined the game
We have been busy for the past few months — busy enough that we decided it was time to look for a helping hand (or two!). We were lucky enough to find some very capable hands indeed. Starting today, we have a new team member, joining us from NCsoft’s Aion team: Martin ‘Amboss’ Rabl.
We’ve had great experiences working with Martin in the past (especially Jen, who worked directly with him for many years), and we are very happy to have his skills and enthusiasm in our Gatwick office. He’ll be helping us to build on the work we are doing on communication and social media for our clients, as well as bringing his valuable expertise on everything German, both as a professional and as a native.
Please join us in welcoming Martin to the team!

Where are we going?
Spring is always a busy period as far conferences and events are concerned. And the calendar this year happened in a way that the week of the 25th of April see no less than the 3 events collides in terms of dates:
- The Nordic Game conference will take place in Malmö (Sweden) from the 27 to the 30th of April
- Quo Vadis will take place in Berlin (Germany) from the 27th to the 29th of April
- The first iteration of the Webgame Conference will be on the 29th of Paril, in paris (France)
All of them I wanted to attend to, for different reasons, but that is obviously not possible. Read the rest of this entry »

“Playing the game” is out

I have mentioned here a couple of times that last year I was involved in an Initiative from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) related to mentorship in the UK game industry.
Halfway through the experiment, I think all the participants were actually very pleased with the outcome. When we met in September, questions arose about the legacy of the project. Because of its mandate (push for innovations and new things), the NESTA wasn’t going to sponsor this initiative for another year. Then someone (I can’t remember who, it might well haven been Jackie who was in charge of the whole experiment) came up with the idea to actually write a book about it. Putting a book together takes a lot of work and energy, and I can only salute the excellent jobs done by Charles Cecil and Chris Wright as editors of this project. My contribution (the 2 sections under my name and 5-6 sections here and there in the “Game Plan”) is by no way comparable to theirs, but I am nonetheless very proud to have participated in making this book.
You can download the book here: http://www.nesta.org.uk/library/documents/playing_the_game.pdf
